Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar recently spoke about the crucial role of media in maintaining law and order. He highlighted the importance of police-media cooperation in ensuring that the public gets accurate information. Kumar was addressing journalists at an event organized by the Pune Shramik Patrakar Sangh, marking one year of his tenure. The event was held at Cummins Hall, Patrakar Bhavan, Navi Peth, where journalists from print and electronic media were present.
Media as the Fourth Pillar
Kumar acknowledged that the media plays a vital role in democracy. “The police work to maintain law and order, while the media informs the public. News can be both positive and negative, but negative reports should be taken as opportunities to improve,” he said.
He emphasized that better communication between the police and media can help in crime detection and in reducing lawlessness.
Traffic Solutions Using AI
Traffic congestion in Pune is a growing issue, and the government has allocated ₹435 crore to address it. Kumar shared that Pune police will soon implement an AI-based intelligent traffic system. Traffic signals will be synchronized based on real-time vehicle movement, helping to improve traffic flow. Currently, Pune’s average traffic speed is 20 kmph, but this system aims to make a significant improvement within a year.
‘Koyata Gang’ is a Myth
Dismissing rumors, Kumar clarified that there is no organized ‘Koyata Gang’ in Pune. However, incidents of vehicle break-ins have increased. He assured that strict action is being taken against those involved in vandalism.
“We have reinforced the law and will continue to do so. Citizens should stay alert and cooperate with the police,” he added.
Criminals Glorifying Crime on Social Media Will Be Punished
Kumar warned that criminals using social media to glorify crime will face strict action. “We have already arrested 20-25 people who made crime-related reels. Cases have been filed, and we urge citizens to report such activities by tagging Pune City Police,” he said.
No More Bribes!
Kumar made it clear that corruption within the police force will not be tolerated. “If any police officer demands a bribe, report it to us immediately. We will take strict action,” he assured. He also emphasized that traffic officers should not hide in corners to catch violators but be visible while managing traffic.
Weapon Licenses Under Review
The police will review all weapon licenses. Criminals will lose their licenses, and only genuine applicants will receive new ones.
“So far, we have issued 23 new licenses and canceled 300. Additionally, 400 individuals have been served show-cause notices,” Kumar informed.
Making Pune Safer
Kumar stressed that Pune should be known as a safe city, not a crime hub. Efforts are being made to reduce police response time from 8 minutes to 5 minutes. “Crime rates have decreased, but we are still not satisfied. We will continue working to make Pune a crime-free city,” he assured.
With these announcements, the Pune Police Commissioner reiterated his commitment to improving law enforcement, traffic management, and police-public relations in the city.
