Pune Prepares for Heat as Temperatures Rise to 37.7°C

Pune is facing an unexpected rise in temperatures, with the mercury reaching 37.7°C, making it one of the hottest days this season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that hot weather will continue, with daytime temperatures staying higher than normal for the coming week.

Unseasonal Heatwave Hits the City

The maximum temperature of 37.7°C, recorded on February 18, is much higher than Pune’s usual temperature for February. Talegaon, an area near Pune, recorded a scorching 38.8°C, making it one of the hottest places in the region. This sudden increase in temperature has left residents struggling with the early arrival of summer-like conditions.

According to the IMD, the rise in temperatures is due to:

  • Dry winds from southern India, reducing moisture in the air.
  • Weather changes in northern India, preventing cooler winds from reaching Pune.
  • Clear skies, allowing for longer exposure to direct sunlight.

Meteorologists predict no immediate relief, with Pune likely to experience daytime temperatures around 36-38°C in the coming days. Night temperatures, however, are expected to stay between 12-15°C, creating big temperature changes that could affect health.

Impact on Daily Life

The rising temperatures have already begun to affect people, with more cases of dehydration, fatigue, and heat-related illnesses being reported. Health experts advise:
✅ Drink plenty of water and eat fresh fruits.
✅ Avoid direct sunlight, especially between 12 PM and 4 PM.
✅ Use sunscreen, sunglasses, and light cotton clothing.
✅ Take care of elderly people, children, and those with breathing problems, as they are more affected by heat.

With schools and colleges in session, parents are concerned about students’ safety, and some schools are considering changing class timings. Many outdoor events and sports activities are also being shifted to early mornings or evenings.

Temperature Forecast for the Week (Source: IMD Pune)

  • February 19 – 35°C (Hazy sunshine)
  • February 20 – 36°C (Partly cloudy, hot)
  • February 21 – 36°C (Hazy sun)
  • February 22 – 35°C (Sunny, dry)
  • February 23 – 35°C (Hazy sunshine)

The IMD has urged Pune residents to take necessary precautions and follow heat safety measures. With summer usually beginning in mid-March, this early temperature rise suggests a longer hot season ahead. Authorities are keeping a close watch and will issue further heat advisories if needed.
