A tragic incident unfolded in Karvenagar, Pune, as 26-year-old Rahul Joshi lost his life after a tree collapsed on him during heavy rainfall near Alankar Police Chowki. The mishap occurred as Rahul was heading toward the Sinhagad Road area on Monday.
For the past few days, Pune has been experiencing intense monsoon showers, triggering multiple incidents of tree collapses across the city. In Rahul’s case, eyewitnesses report that the tree appeared visibly decayed and unstable. He sustained critical injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Local residents and commuters have expressed outrage over what they say is sheer negligence by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). They allege that despite visible warnings and years of repeated monsoon-related issues, the PMC failed to identify and remove decaying or dangerously leaning trees before the onset of the rainy season.
“This was not an accident — it was avoidable. The tree was visibly rotten. Why wasn’t it trimmed or removed earlier?” questioned one resident angrily, adding that this isn’t the first such incident in Pune during monsoon season.
Citizens are now demanding an immediate audit of tree health across Pune and strict accountability from municipal authorities. Many are calling for a systematic hazard assessment program that includes trimming weak branches, removing decayed trees, and reinforcing safety around public walkways and roads.
The incident has once again sparked debate on urban safety and disaster preparedness, especially during seasonal transitions. Civic bodies are under increasing pressure to act swiftly before further lives are lost.
