Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other world leaders for their attention to the Ukraine conflict. His comments come amid growing international pressure on Russia to agree to a proposed 30-day ceasefire without conditions.
Speaking in a press briefing, Putin stated,
“I would like to thank President Trump for his dedication to resolving the Ukraine issue. Despite their own national concerns, many leaders—including the Chairman of China, the Prime Minister of India, the Presidents of Brazil and South Africa—have devoted significant time to this matter. We appreciate their efforts as they are all aimed at achieving peace and preventing further loss of life.”
A Ceasefire with ‘Nuances’
While Putin signaled openness to the ceasefire plan, he added that there were unresolved “nuances” and “serious questions” regarding its implementation. He said,
“We agree with the proposal to halt hostilities, but such a move should lead to lasting peace and address the root causes of the conflict.”
Trump, in response, described Putin’s statement as “promising” but “not complete,” indicating that more negotiations are needed before a ceasefire deal can materialize.
Ukraine’s Skepticism Over Putin’s Intentions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, dismissed Putin’s remarks as “predictable” and “manipulative,” arguing that Russia was merely trying to stall rather than genuinely work toward peace. He claimed Putin is hesitant to openly tell Trump that he intends to prolong the conflict.
The geopolitical maneuvering around the Ukraine crisis highlights the complexities of securing a lasting peace. With the United States urging Russia to accept the ceasefire without conditions and India advocating for diplomatic dialogue, the coming weeks will determine whether global mediation efforts can break the deadlock or if the conflict will persist with no clear resolution.
