Former Congress MLA Ravindra Dhangekar has rejoined Shiv Sena, marking a return to his political roots after years of switching parties. This move, announced in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, comes after a series of election losses and is expected to impact Pune’s political scene ahead of civic polls.
From Sena to Congress and Back Again
Dhangekar started his political career with Shiv Sena, serving as a corporator in Pune for 10 years. He later joined Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) before switching to Congress in 2017. His biggest win came in the 2023 Kasba Peth Assembly bypoll, where he defeated BJP in its stronghold. However, he lost in both the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, leading to his decision to return to Shiv Sena.
“I have always worked for the people. Shiv Sena taught me public service, and I am happy to be back,” Dhangekar said.
Political Impact: A Boost for Shiv Sena?
Shiv Sena has struggled in Pune’s politics for years, failing to win any Assembly seats in recent elections. Dhangekar’s return could strengthen the party’s presence in the city, especially before the upcoming municipal elections.
Deputy CM Eknath Shinde welcomed Dhangekar, saying:
“He is a popular leader in Pune. His return will make Shiv Sena stronger in the city.”
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena leader Uday Samant hinted that more leaders could join soon, saying that two other former MLAs from Pune are also in talks to return to the party.
Why Did Dhangekar Leave Congress?
Dhangekar stated that he left Congress after discussing with his supporters, who felt that he would be able to work better in Shiv Sena.
“I have nothing against Congress. I built good relations there, but my supporters wanted me to switch,” he said.
