After nearly three decades, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reclaimed power in Delhi, with Rekha Gupta being sworn in as the new Chief Minister on February 20, 2025. The grand oath-taking ceremony at Ramlila Maidan marked a historic moment, as Gupta became the fourth woman to hold the state’s top position. Alongside her, six cabinet ministers also took the oath, signaling the beginning of a new political era in the national capital.
From Student Leader to Chief Minister
Rekha Gupta’s journey in politics has been long and eventful. Starting as a Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) President in 1996-97, she later became a three-time councillor and even served as the Mayor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). Elected as the MLA from Shalimar Bagh, she has now risen to lead Delhi’s governance, carrying with her years of grassroots political experience.
BJP Leaders Hail the Victory
Gupta’s appointment has been met with enthusiasm within the BJP ranks. Leaders from across India have praised the victory, calling it a step toward a ‘Viksit Delhi’ (Developed Delhi).
Goa CM Pramod Sawant highlighted how the BJP’s return to power in Delhi would ensure rapid development with the support of the central government.
Tripura CM Manik Saha attributed the party’s success to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s welfare initiatives for the poor, youth, and women.
Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini expressed confidence in Gupta’s leadership, calling it a turning point for the capital.
UP Deputy CM described Gupta as the ‘Bhagya Rekha’ (fortunate line) and ‘Vikas Rekha’ (line of development) of Delhi, emphasizing her role in the city’s transformation.
Challenges and Road Ahead
The BJP’s decisive victory, winning 48 out of 70 seats, has put Rekha Gupta in charge of a city grappling with challenges like pollution, infrastructure development, education, and healthcare. Key promises made during the campaign—such as revamping government schools, improving healthcare, and ensuring free electricity—will now be under the spotlight.
This shift in power also marks the end of AAP’s reign, with former CM Arvind Kejriwal’s governance facing increasing scrutiny. The BJP, on the other hand, has vowed to bring “double-engine development” to Delhi, aligning state policies with those of the central government.
As Rekha Gupta steps into her new role, all eyes are on how she will shape the future of Delhi. Will she truly become the ‘Vikas Rekha’ of Delhi as her party promises? The coming months will provide the answer.
