Following the passing of his father, Dorabji Tata took the helm of the Tata Group with determination and foresight. One of his most remarkable achievements was the establishment of Tata Steel in Jamshedpur in 1907, India’s first integrated steel plant. This bold step laid the foundation for the nation’s industrial independence. He also led the creation of Tata Power, venturing into hydroelectric energy and infrastructure development, sectors critical for India’s modernization.

Under his stewardship, the Tata Group expanded into new industries, evolving into a symbol of innovation, resilience, and ethical business practices.

Beyond Business: A Commitment to Society

Sir Dorabji’s vision extended far beyond the boardroom. In 1919, he established the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, one of India’s earliest and most impactful charitable foundations. This institution has supported a wide range of causes, from education and scientific research to healthcare. Notably, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru flourished under his support.
