India’s Stand on Ceasefire
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, speaking from Brazil during his all-party delegation’s visit, dismissed US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Tharoor stated that India needed no persuasion to stop military action, as it had already committed to peace from the start.
India Focused on Development, Not War
Tharoor told ANI, “No one needed to persuade us to stop. We had already said to stop. If there was any persuasion, it would have been aimed at Pakistan.” He emphasized India’s position that it wants peace and development, not conflict.
Clarification on Operation Sindoor
Tharoor reiterated that India’s May 7 strikes under Operation Sindoor were a direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack and not the beginning of a war.
“It is retribution against terrorists, period,” he said. He added that had Pakistan not reacted, India wouldn’t have either.
US President Donald Trump has previously claimed that he had a major role in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. However, Indian officials, including Tharoor, continue to downplay the role of foreign mediation, reinforcing India’s stance of strategic autonomy in matters of national security.
