Singapore PM Lawrence Wong Meets FM Sitharaman, Pushes Deeper Strategic Ties

New Delhi: Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday, with both sides reaffirming their intent to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) through closer collaboration in trade, investment, and emerging sectors.

Wong’s three-day visit to India, his first since assuming office, marks a key moment in the bilateral relationship. Accompanied by a high-level delegation including cabinet ministers and senior officials, Wong’s trip also coincides with the 60th anniversary of India-Singapore diplomatic ties—an occasion both governments have framed as symbolic of continuity and growth in the partnership.

The discussions covered a wide spectrum: fintech, skill development, healthcare, sustainability, connectivity, and traditional areas such as trade and investment. From Singapore’s side, Acting Transport Minister and Senior Minister of State for Finance Jeffrey Siow and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Industry Gan Siow Huang joined the talks.

The Finance Ministry said,“Both countries agreed to deepen cooperation across these domains, with the visit expected to result in several high-level agreements. Sectors in focus include finance, digital innovation, civil aviation, maritime cooperation, and even space technology—highlighting the breadth of India-Singapore collaboration.”

The timing is notable. Just weeks earlier, the third India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR) in New Delhi reviewed progress across six pillars: Advanced Manufacturing, Connectivity, Digitalisation, Healthcare, Skill Development, and Sustainability. Wong’s presence is expected to add momentum to many of these initiatives, underlining how both nations see the partnership as pivotal to navigating the next phase of regional and global growth.
