A devastating fire that broke out in the early hours of Wednesday claimed the lives of six members of a family in Indore, raising serious concerns about fire safety in residential areas. Preliminary investigations suggest that the blaze may have originated from an electric car that was being charged outside the house, though authorities have stated that the exact cause will be confirmed only after a detailed forensic examination.
According to police officials, the fire rapidly engulfed the two-storey residence owned by businessman Manoj Pugaliya, leaving little time for occupants to react. The incident was reported around 4 a.m., prompting an immediate emergency response from local authorities.
Fire Spread Intensified by Hazardous Materials
Officials revealed that the intensity of the fire was significantly amplified due to the presence of multiple flammable materials stored within the premises. At least 15 LPG cylinders and chemical substances were reportedly kept inside the house, contributing to a series of explosions during the blaze.
“Several cylinders exploded after the fire broke out, which accelerated its spread and made rescue operations extremely challenging,” said Santosh Singh, Police Commissioner of Indore.
The explosions not only intensified the fire but also caused structural damage to parts of the building, complicating efforts by firefighters to contain the situation.
Victims Trapped Inside
Authorities believe that the family members were asleep at the time the fire started, which delayed their response. A critical factor that may have prevented their escape was the failure of the house’s electronic locking system.
Police indicated that the electric lock mechanism likely malfunctioned due to the fire, leaving the doors sealed and trapping those inside. This technical failure proved fatal, as the occupants were unable to exit the building despite the escalating danger.
By the time rescue teams arrived, the fire had already spread extensively across both floors of the house.
Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts
Following the alert, at least six fire tenders were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly two hours before bringing it under control. The operation was complicated by continuous explosions and dense smoke emanating from the building.
During the rescue operation, six bodies were recovered from the charred remains of the house. The deceased were identified as Manoj Pugaliya (65), Vijay Sethiya (63), Suman (60), Simran (30), Chotu Sethiya (22), and a 12-year-old child.
In addition to the fatalities, three individuals sustained serious burn injuries and were rushed to Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital for treatment. Hospital authorities confirmed that the injured are currently receiving medical care.
Investigation Underway
While initial findings point toward an electric vehicle charging unit as the possible source of ignition, officials have emphasized that a comprehensive forensic investigation is necessary to establish the exact cause of the fire.
Experts will examine the remains of the vehicle, electrical wiring, and other potential ignition sources to determine whether the incident was caused by a technical malfunction, short circuit, or other factors.
Authorities are also expected to assess whether safety protocols were followed, particularly in relation to the storage of LPG cylinders and chemicals within a residential property.
Growing Concerns Around Fire Safety
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of fire safety measures in urban homes, especially those involving high-risk elements such as fuel storage and electrical equipment.
With the increasing adoption of electric vehicles, experts have been advocating for stricter guidelines regarding charging infrastructure, including proper installation, ventilation, and monitoring systems to prevent overheating or electrical faults.
Similarly, the storage of LPG cylinders and industrial chemicals in residential areas has raised concerns among safety regulators. Improper handling or excessive storage of such materials can significantly increase the risk of catastrophic fires.
Need for Awareness and Regulation
Safety experts stress that households must adopt basic precautions such as installing fire alarms, maintaining functional fire extinguishers, and ensuring that emergency exits remain accessible at all times.
The failure of the electronic locking system in this case has also brought attention to the need for manual override options in smart home technologies, particularly during emergencies.
Local authorities are likely to review safety regulations and conduct inspections to prevent similar incidents in the future.
A Tragic Reminder
The Indore fire serves as a grim reminder of how quickly a residential fire can escalate into a fatal disaster when multiple risk factors converge. As investigations continue, the focus remains on understanding the cause and implementing measures to prevent such tragedies.
For now, the city mourns the loss of six lives in an incident that underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety awareness and stricter enforcement of regulations.
