Telangana has emerged as the national leader in organ donation, earning recognition from the Centre on National Organ Donation Day in Delhi. Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda presented the award to representatives of the state’s Jeevandan programme, which has set benchmarks in organ donation awareness, coordination, and transplantation.

According to the Union Health Ministry, Telangana recorded 4.88 organ donations per 10 lakh population in 2024, far exceeding the national average of 0.8. The state has conducted 464 transplantations so far this year, following 725 in 2024 and 729 in 2023.

Expressing happiness over the achievement, State Health Minister D. Rajanarasimha said Telangana recently adopted the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA) to ensure equitable access to organs across all sections of society. He highlighted that organ transplant surgeries are being offered free of cost under the Aarogyasri scheme.

“In 2024 alone, organs were harvested from 188 donors, saving the lives of 725 recipients,” Rajanarasimha noted.

Dr. Sree Bhusan Raju, nodal officer of the Jeevandan programme and senior nephrologist, praised the initiative, stating that it has made Telangana “a model for the rest of the country.”

In recognition of this feat, the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) conferred the award on Telangana, reinforcing its status as a pioneer in organ donation.
