Late Sunday night, chaos unfolded near Pune Railway Station when a 35-year-old man allegedly attempted to desecrate Mahatma Gandhi’s statue using a sharp weapon. Thankfully, alert citizens quickly intervened, preventing major damage and handing the man over to police.

What Happened?

The accused, Suraj Shukla, originally from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, now lives in Vishrantwadi, Pune. According to police, he was carrying a billhook (a sharp tool) and religious books, and tried to climb the statue’s pedestal.

The man, who looked mentally unstable, attempted to desecrate the statue using a sharp tool. A small tile on the pedestal was damaged,” said DCP Milind Mohite (Zone 2).

Suraj had reportedly purchased the weapon in Wai, Satara, and sells rudraksh (holy beads) for a living.

What’s the next action?

He was caught by people present at the site before he could do more harm. He was handed over to the police. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and an investigation is underway.

By Monday morning, the incident had triggered strong reactions from political circles. Local Congress workers, led by city unit president Arvind Shinde, staged a protest near the statue, demanding strict action against the accused.

“He climbed the pedestal and attempted to desecrate the statue. We strongly condemn this act,” said Shinde.

Dozens of party workers gathered at the site, raising slogans and calling for accountability.

Ravi Jadhav, a daily commuter who uses Pune Station regularly, shared his concern:

“This place is not just a transit hub; it holds historical and emotional value. Seeing Gandhi’s statue here reminds us of peace. What happened last night was disturbing — I hope security around such spots is increased.”

What’s the Current Status?

  • The statue itself remains unharmed, though a small part of the base was chipped.

  • The accused is in custody, and further investigation is ongoing.

  • No motive has been officially confirmed yet, though the man is suspected to be mentally unstable.
