Chennai Super Kings (CSK), one of the most celebrated franchises in the IPL, is going through a rough patch in the 2025 season — and so is its legendary leader, MS Dhoni.
With CSK already knocked out of playoff contention and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad sidelined due to a hairline fracture, Dhoni once again stepped into the captain’s shoes. But this time, things feel different.
“The Spark Isn’t There”: Tom Moody’s Blunt Verdict
In a sharp observation on ESPNcricinfo’s ‘TimeOut’ show, former Australia cricketer Tom Moody didn’t mince words about Dhoni’s form and presence this season.
“Every team is a mirror of their leaders, and he is such a significant leader… We all have a fire inside of us, and at times we need to recognise when that is starting to flicker — and if not, go out,”
— Tom Moody, on ESPN Cricinfo.
Moody added that Dhoni’s energy, which once lit up the field, seems to be dimming this year.
“I just don’t know whether what I’m seeing is correct, but certainly my observation is that the spark is not there that I have seen in previous years.”
— Tom Moody, ESPN Cricinfo.
MS Dhoni: “There’s No Escaping the Fact I’m in the Last Phase”
After CSK’s win over Kolkata Knight Riders earlier this season — a match played just before the tournament was briefly suspended due to India-Pakistan tensions — Dhoni acknowledged that his cricketing days may be numbered.
In the post-match presentation (broadcast via Star Sports), he shared:
“A lot of them don’t know when it is going to be my last time (smiles), so they want to come and see me play. There is no escaping the fact that I am in the last phase of my career. After this IPL gets over, I have to work hard for another 6–8 months to see if my body can take this pressure. Nothing to decide now, but the love and affection I have seen is excellent.”

The team will now play to avoid finishing at the bottom of the points table, a spot they’ve never hit in IPL history.
What’s Next?
While nothing is confirmed, the signs are clear: this may be Dhoni’s final IPL season. Whether he returns for one more lap or hangs up his boots, one thing is certain — his legacy is already etched in cricketing folklore.
