Tottenham Hotspur ended their 17-year trophy drought in style by beating Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday night. The match was held at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Spain.
⚽ Brennan Johnson Scores the Winning Goal
The only goal of the match came in the 42nd minute from Brennan Johnson, who took advantage of a messy deflection in the box. A cross from Pape Matar Sarr hit both Luke Shaw and Johnson before sneaking past United goalkeeper Andre Onana.
“This club has not won a trophy for 17 years — it means so much,” said Johnson after the match.
Poor League Season, Big European Win
Despite finishing 17th in the Premier League this season, Spurs made history in Europe. This win gives them their third Europa League title and their first European trophy since 1984.
Tottenham’s coach Ange Postecoglou, from Australia, continued his tradition of winning a trophy in his second season at every club he’s managed.
Strong Defence Saves the Day
Manchester United had most of the ball (73% possession) and pushed hard for a goal in the second half. But Tottenham’s defence stayed strong. Micky van de Ven made a key clearance, and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario saved a late header from Luke Shaw.
“I’m feeling amazing. It’s what I’ve always dreamt of. The dream came true. I’m so happy — the happiest man in the world,” said Son Heung-min, who lifted the trophy for Spurs.
United End Season Without a Trophy
For Manchester United, it was a disappointing night. Despite their efforts, they ended the season empty-handed.
