Mild tremors were felt across Kolkata and several parts of Northeast India on Friday after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Dhaka, Bangladesh, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake’s epicentre was located in Narsingdi district, roughly 50 km from the Bangladeshi capital, at a shallow depth of 10 km. Despite the strong vibrations felt across regions, authorities confirmed that no injuries, casualties or major damage have been reported so far.

In Kolkata, tremors were felt around 10:10 am, prompting many residents to rush out of their homes and offices in alarm. Social media quickly filled with videos showing ceiling fans swaying and people gathering outdoors as a precaution.
Districts across North Bengal including Cooch Behar, Dakshin Dinajpur and Uttar Dinajpur also reported noticeable shaking. Similar accounts came from the Northeast, with residents in Guwahati, Shillong and Agartala confirming they experienced tremors.
The earthquake momentarily interrupted the ongoing Bangladesh vs Ireland Test match in Dhaka, though play resumed within minutes and no damage to the stadium was recorded.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation, and further updates are awaited.
