Trump, Musk Move Towards Reconciliation After Public Fallout

Published:

Just days after a public spat with tech billionaire Elon Musk, U.S. President Donald Trump signaled that he holds “no hard feelings” towards the Tesla CEO, suggesting that a patch-up could be on the horizon.

Speaking to the New York Post, Trump said, “Look, I have no hard feelings. I was really surprised that  happened. He went after a bill that’s phenomenal. I think he feels very badly that he said that.” When asked about the possibility of reconciliation, Trump added, “I haven’t really thought about it. I would imagine he wants to speak to me. If I were him, I would want to speak to me. Maybe he’s already called. You’d have to ask him.”

The president also noted, “We had a good relationship and I just wish him well—very well.”

Following Trump’s comments, Musk took to the social media platform X, stating, “I regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week. They went too far.”

Backdrop of the Fallout

The dispute between Trump and Musk escalated over a controversial $5 trillion tax and spending bill. Musk, who had previously served on the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), criticized the bill as “outrageous and a disgusting abomination.”

In response, Trump claimed Musk had been aware of the bill all along. Musk retaliated by calling Trump a liar and warning that the bill would sharply increase national debt. The bill reportedly includes tax cuts, Medicaid reductions, and increased border security spending.

The once-close relationship soured further when Musk posted (and later deleted) an allegation on X linking Trump to Epstein’s files, while Trump warned Musk of facing consequences if he funded Democratic candidates. Musk, a significant Trump supporter and donor during the 2024 campaign, even predicted Trump would lose the election without his backing.

Looking Ahead

While the feud appeared to mark an end to their alliance, recent statements from both sides suggest that a reconciliation may be possible. Trump reiterated his focus on improving the country, saying, “My sole function now is getting this country back to a level higher than it’s ever been.”

Whether the two will fully mend fences remains to be seen, but for now, both seem open to moving past the heated exchange.
