In a breakthrough for Maharashtra’s fight against Left-Wing Extremism (LWE), 12 hardcore Naxalites, carrying a combined bounty of over ₹1 crore, surrendered on Friday in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Gadchiroli district.
The surrender, seen as a symbolic blow to the outlawed Naxal movement. It took place during the CM’s visit to Kawande village on the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border. Notably, Fadnavis became the first Maharashtra Chief Minister to enter this remote, insurgency-hit region.
“Naxalites are losing faith in violence. This is a strong message to those still in the jungles: lay down arms and return to society, or face decisive action,” the CM said.
Record Surrenders and the March to 2026
Over the past 18 months, Maharashtra has recorded:
-
28 Maoists killed
-
31 arrested
-
44 surrendered — the highest figures so far.
“We will root out Naxalism from Maharashtra completely by March 2026,” Fadnavis declared confidently.
During the event, the surrendered Naxalites laid down sophisticated weapons and were presented with copies of the Indian Constitution. A powerful gesture marking their reintegration.
‘Back of Naxalism Broken’
“The back of Naxalism is broken in Maharashtra. Only a few active members remain. They too must surrender or will face action,” Fadnavis warned.
The government’s policy remains clear:
-
Rehabilitation for those who surrender.
-
Arrest or neutralisation for those who continue violence.
From Weapons to New Beginnings
In a heartening turn, the CM attended a mass wedding of 13 former Naxalites, underscoring the administration’s focus on rehabilitation and second chances.
“After years in the jungles, these individuals are embracing peace and building new lives,” he said.
Boosting Security & Development
During the visit, the CM also:
-
Felicitated C-60 commandos (Maharashtra’s elite anti-Naxal force).
-
Handed over AK-103 rifles, ASMI pistols, and bulletproof jackets.
-
Distributed 19 new police vehicles, including bulletproof units.
As part of ongoing development efforts:
-
Fadnavis inspected the construction of a ₹10.7 crore, 120-metre bridge over Korma Nallah, built using drone technology to enhance connectivity with Chhattisgarh.
-
Distributed welfare benefits under the ‘Dharti Aaba’ campaign.
The CM also shared an ambitious vision: transforming Gadchiroli into a future steel hub, while ensuring sustainable growth and respect for the region’s natural and tribal heritage.
“The fight against Naxalism is not just about security — it is about development, opportunity, and dignity,” Fadnavis emphasised.
