Virat Kohli Puts End to ODI Retirement Rumours Ahead of Australia Series

Published:

Amid growing speculation over his One Day International (ODI) future, Virat Kohli has seemingly put all rumours to rest with a cryptic yet powerful social media post ahead of India’s upcoming series against Australia.

“The only time you truly fail is when you decide to give up,” Kohli wrote on X (formerly Twitter) — a statement widely interpreted as his message to critics questioning his commitment to ODIs.

Kohli’s Future and Selection for 2027 World Cup

Having already retired from Tests and T20Is, Kohli’s absence since the Champions Trophy 2025 final had fueled speculation about his ODI future and potential retirement after the Australia tour. However, the latest post appears to confirm his intent to continue.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar dismissed all rumours, confirming that Kohli and Rohit Sharma are part of India’s long-term plans with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind.

“They’ve cleared all fitness tests and remain part of our plans. With the captaincy transition done, both are focused on the next phase,” Agarkar said.

Support From Team Management

Following India’s 2–0 Test series win over the West Indies, head coach Gautam Gambhir also weighed in, praising the senior duo’s discipline and composure.

“The World Cup is still over two years away. What matters now is staying present and focused. Virat and Rohit’s experience will be crucial in Australia’s conditions,” Gambhir said in the post-match presser.

What’s Next

India’s upcoming tour of Australia will be a key test for Kohli, who remains one of India’s most consistent ODI performers. With the World Cup cycle now in motion, his form and leadership are expected to play a decisive role in shaping India’s 2027 campaign.
