‘We Count on India’s Contribution’: Zelenskyy Thanks Modi on Ukraine’s Independence Day

Published:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his greetings on Ukraine’s Independence Day, underscoring Kyiv’s reliance on India’s role in efforts to end the ongoing war with Russia.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy praised India’s consistent commitment to peace and dialogue.

“Now, as the entire world strives to end this horrible war with dignity and lasting peace, we count on India’s contribution. Every decision that strengthens diplomacy leads to better security not only in Europe, but also in the Indo-Pacific and beyond,” he wrote.

It shows Zelenskyy’s direct acknowledgement of Modi’s message and his emphasis on India’s diplomatic weight in global security.

Modi’s Response

In his letter, Prime Minister Modi thanked Zelenskyy for his message and extended greetings to the people of Ukraine. Modi recalled his visit to Kyiv in August 2024, noting the progress in bilateral ties since then.

He reiterated India’s long-standing stance: that the country has “always stood on the side of peace.” Modi assured that India remains committed to supporting

“sincere efforts seeking an early, abiding, and peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.”

The letter highlights India’s position—peace through diplomacy—and underscores New Delhi’s willingness to deepen cooperation with Ukraine beyond the immediate conflict.

Broader Significance

The exchange comes at a critical moment. For Kyiv, India’s stance matters because New Delhi is one of the few major powers that maintains open lines with both Moscow and Western capitals. For India, the war has broader implications: it affects global energy flows, food security, and the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific.

India has consistently called for dialogue while avoiding direct condemnation of Moscow, a balancing act shaped by its historic ties with Russia and its growing strategic partnership with the West. Zelenskyy’s public acknowledgment signals Kyiv’s recognition that India could play a constructive, if delicate, role in shaping diplomatic outcomes.

The carefully worded messages from both leaders reflect a shared interest: Ukraine’s urgent need for broader diplomatic support, and India’s desire to project itself as a responsible global actor committed to peace and stability.

As the war enters yet another difficult phase, India’s balancing act—between its old partnership with Russia and its aspirations as a global diplomatic force—remains under sharp global scrutiny.
