The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nationwide alert as parts of India gear up for an intense mix of extreme weather. While 17 states are on alert for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and hail, parts of Maharashtra are likely to experience a searing heatwave.
What’s Causing the Shift?
A cyclonic circulation hovering over North India and nearby regions is responsible for the abrupt change in weather. This system is expected to trigger widespread showers, thunder, and in some cases, hailstorms and strong winds up to 60 km/h.
Rain and Snow in the North
• Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are likely to witness heavy rainfall and snowfall.
• Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are on alert for intense rain, lightning, and gusty winds.
• In Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, overcast skies and intermittent showers are expected.
• Delhi will remain cloudy, but no rain is predicted.
Eastern and Northeastern India on Watch
The IMD has flagged states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura for heavy rain over the next five days. April 22 has been marked for extremely heavy showers in parts of the region.
South India Not Spared Either
Southern states are also in for wet days ahead. Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu are likely to receive significant rainfall.
Maharashtra Faces a Scorching Spell
While rains hit the rest of the country, Maharashtra is experiencing a heatwave. In Vidarbha, temperatures have soared past 40°C, with Chandrapur recording a blistering 45.6°C—the highest in the region.
Local authorities have issued heat advisories, urging people to stay hydrated, avoid going out during peak hours, and take health precautions.
What It Means for You
As weather patterns swing between extremes, the IMD’s alerts are a reminder to stay informed, plan ahead, and ensure safety—whether you’re dodging thunderstorms or enduring a heatwave.
