Google is expanding its “voluntary exit” program

Published:

Google has expanded its voluntary exit program, now including its People Operations (HR) team. This move follows a broader restructuring effort aimed at streamlining operations and improving efficiency across the company. Initially introduced in January for employees in the Platforms & Devices division—including those working on Android, Pixel, Chrome, and Nest—the program has now been extended to HR employees in the U.S.

The decision was communicated through an internal email by Google’s Chief People Officer, Fiona Cicconi. The voluntary exit program allows eligible HR employees to opt for severance packages if they choose to leave the company. A Google spokesperson confirmed the development, stating,

“To support our People Operations team’s innovative work ahead, we’re opening new roles and offering a voluntary exit program with severance for their U.S.-based employees.”

Google’s People Operations division is responsible for various functions, including recruitment, employee benefits, compensation, and workplace culture. By restructuring, the company aims to align its HR department with evolving business needs, ensuring that the team remains focused on efficiency and innovation.

This expansion of voluntary exits follows Google’s broader cost-cutting measures, which have led to layoffs and restructuring across multiple teams. Industry analysts view this as part of a larger trend in the tech sector, where major firms, including Meta and Amazon, have also implemented workforce optimization strategies amid changing market conditions.

As Google refines its workforce strategy, the company emphasizes that these changes are intended to create a more agile and high-performing team structure. The impact on Google’s overall workforce remains to be seen, but the move signals a continued focus on efficiency and strategic resource allocation.
