Mamata Banerjee Calls Maha Kumbh “Mrityu Kumbh”, Sparks Political and Religious Controversy

Published:

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has caused a major controversy by referring to the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj as “Mrityu Kumbh” (Death Kumbh). Her remarks, made in the West Bengal Assembly, have received strong reactions from religious leaders, opposition politicians, and BJP leaders, leading to a heated discussion over the handling of the religious event.

Mamata’s Criticism: Poor Management, Hidden Deaths?

Banerjee criticized the Uttar Pradesh government, accusing them of failing to provide proper arrangements for devotees while ensuring luxury facilities for VIPs. She also alleged that the administration was hiding actual casualty numbers from recent stampedes at the Mela.

“They have hidden hundreds of bodies to bring down the toll,” she claimed, raising questions over the safety and preparedness of the event.

Her remarks were meant to highlight mismanagement and lack of crowd control at one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, but they quickly became a political flashpoint.

Religious Leaders Demand Apology

Banerjee’s comments did not go unnoticed by the Sant Samaj, a group of Hindu religious leaders, who strongly criticized her statement.

Mahant Rajendra Das, head of the Nirmohi Ani Akhara, called it an insult to Sanatan Dharma and demanded an apology. The religious community has urged devotees across the country to protest against Banerjee’s remarks.

BJP Calls It an Attack on Hindu Faith

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not hold back either. Suvendu Adhikari, BJP leader from West Bengal, accused Mamata Banerjee of consistently undermining Hindu traditions.

“She has no problem with gatherings elsewhere, but she finds fault in a sacred Hindu event attended by crores of people,” said Adhikari, calling for nationwide protests against her remarks.

Maha Kumbh: Devotion Meets Reality

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, which started on January 13, is expected to attract over 400 million devotees over six weeks. The event holds deep religious significance, but it has also raised concerns over public health and safety.

Recent reports revealed that 19 tuberculosis cases were detected during a 100-day intensive health campaign at the Mela. Given the large number of people gathering in close proximity, experts worry about the spread of diseases and medical emergencies.

Despite this, the Yogi Adityanath-led government has defended the event, calling it a symbol of faith and cultural heritage.

Politics, Faith, and Public Safety

Mamata Banerjee’s remarks have once again brought religion and politics to the center stage. While some argue that she is raising valid concerns about mismanagement, others believe she is playing politics over Hindu sentiments.

With the 2026 state elections and the 2029 Lok Sabha elections on the horizon, such controversies are expected to keep fueling political debates.
