“My Name is Bharath”: Bengaluru Techie Killed in Kashmir Terror Attack

Published:

Family holiday turns into horror; incident raises major concerns over tourist safety

Bharath Bhushan, a 35-year-old tech professional, was on holiday in Kashmir with his wife and 3-year-old son when a moment of pride cost him his life. While walking through the scenic valley of Pahalgam, he was stopped by gunmen. When asked about his religion, Bharath calmly replied,

“My name is Bharath.”

Within seconds, he was shot in the head in front of his young child and wife, Dr. Sujatha.

The name — which echoes “Bharat,” another name for India, is believed to have triggered the attackers, who were suspected terrorists targeting civilians.

Back in Bengaluru, grief engulfed Bharath’s home in Sundarnagar, Mathikere. His father, Chennaveerappa (74), only learned about the death from a newspaper during his morning walk.

“My legs gave way. I was shocked. My family didn’t tell me earlier to protect me,” he said.

Just hours before the tragedy, Bharath had called his father, showing him the beautiful views of Kashmir via video call and telling him they were on their way to Pahalgam.

“I told him to be careful,” his father recalled.

News of the terrorist attack started appearing by Tuesday evening, but the family initially didn’t tell the elderly parents to avoid distressing them. Bharath’s brother, Preetham and Sujatha’s brother flew to Kashmir, initially telling the family he was only injured. It wasn’t until later that the full truth was shared.

Public Concern Grows:
This incident has sparked debate on whether tourists should be allowed to travel to sensitive areas without stricter safety arrangements. Many call for improved intelligence, tighter security, and better protection for civilians in conflict-prone regions. Tourism in Kashmir has picked up in recent years, but this heartbreaking incident is a reminder that peace and safety must remain a top priority.
