This explanation made sense—after all, iron oxide (or rust) turns red when it forms on Earth. But now, scientists have discovered a completely different reason why the Red Planet looks the way it does, and it could change how we understand Mars’s history.

A Different Kind of Rust

New research suggests that Mars isn’t covered in regular rust (hematite), but rather in a different mineral—ferrihydrite—which forms in cool, watery conditions. This means that instead of being a dry, dusty planet for billions of years, Mars might have had a lot more water than we previously thought.

A team of researchers from Brown University and the University of Bern came to this conclusion after analyzing data from Mars rovers and conducting lab experiments on iron minerals. They found that ferrihydrite, which forms in the presence of water, is a much better match for the fine red dust that covers Mars’s surface.

Why Does This Matter?

This discovery rewrites our understanding of Mars’s past. If ferrihydrite is responsible for Mars’s color, it suggests that Mars had large amounts of liquid water far earlier than we assumed—possibly over three billion years ago.

And where there’s water, there’s the possibility of life.

For years, scientists have been looking for evidence that Mars was once habitable. Finding proof of an earlier, wetter Mars strengthens the case that microbial life could have once thrived there. It also gives future Mars missions a clearer idea of where to look for signs of ancient life.
